Next stop - Mui Ne! We were picked up by a minibus, which I thought would be a nice ride down, only around ten of us, lots of room. Of course that wasn't the case. We were dropped off to a coach that was already packed. Thankfully I managed to get me and Joey seats together right at the back. There was no room for luggage under the bus so it all went in the aisle instead which meant climbing over peoples bags to get to our seats! I soon realised the reason for this was because the driver was doing errands/personal admin/drop off's on route. He used the underneath space for this. Quite a good idea really, although it meant we had a few stops but for no more than a few minutes. The journey was pretty bumpy, some roads had turned to dirt, some weren't built at all. A few hairy moments but it got us from A to B and it was cheap!
We stayed in Mui Ne Hills Backpackers. It was a travellers heaven - a swimming pool, beer pong competitions, pool table, table football, a bar/restuarant. I could easily have spent my two days laying by the pool! The only downside was the wifi was non existent so it was very difficult to try and book onward travel. Also I clocked birds in small cages...big no no. Have I mentioned I love animals? Not sure I have previously ;)
The owners of the hotel were awesome. Without fail every night they were down for the beer pong! They were chatty and friendly, it was really nice they mixed in. They owned the hotel next door too. I imagine the guests were pretty gutted staying next to a party hostel, given that we shared a pool area and bar/restuarant. Oh well...we loved it!
I had a massage on our first day...waw. I think the first thing she did was step on my back. It was actually more pain than pleasure and I was a bit sore the next day. I flinched a few times to which the woman said 'ouch' but carried on anyway. I did feel like she was getting knots out, so worth the pain.
We took a day trip which included:
- Fairy stream
- Fishing village
- White Sand Dunes
- Red Sand Dunes (for sunset)
The driver gave us 45 minutes at Fairy stream. It is basically a long stream with a waterfall at the top. You have to walk in the stream to get there. First impressions - pretty grim. A vietnamese guy tried to charge us to walk down 'his' steps into the stream. There was quite a big group of us and as soon as someone questioned him on it (it was clearly a con) he started shouting at us 'this is bulls***...this is f***ing bulls***'. He was unlikely to get our money before, but he certainly wasn't getting it now. We all walked further down and entered the stream via steps there. Walking past him I felt so smug at saving myself a whole 16 pence.
I kept my flip flops on as the water looked so dirty and polluted, I did not wanna be barefoot. On a few occassions I definitely stepped in cows poo as they also use the stream. After quite a long (and dare I say pleasant) stroll through the murky water we reached the most unimpressive waterfall to date. A quick picture (to say we have been) and back we walked. We were about fifteen minutes late back to the bus and it had started driving off so we flagged it down! By this point we had met a couple (Emily and Michael) who are also moving to Melbourne!! Woo hoo!
The fishing village was next and it was fine but we only stayed for ten minutes. I wasn't overly impressed by it, just lots of boats in water. Although I don't know what I was expecting either.
Now the white sand dunes...loved them! So beautiful, calm and picturesque. The sand was so soft on my toes and the views were simply beautiful. We were going to rent a quad bike to go around but assumed we could on the red sand dunes so waited. Unfortunately you can't rent them on the red sand dunes so if you want a quad bike the white sand dunes is your chance.
The final stop was the red sand dunes for sunset. These were meh...distinctly average. They did not compare to the white sand dunes. The red sand dunes were a lot dirtier, lots of litter everywhere. On top of that the sunset was one of the worst I have seen...sorry red sand dunes, you just didn't do it for me.
We spent two days in Mui Ne and I really enjoyed it. We met some great people. There isn't loads to do but I liked that relaxed vibe. I definitely think our hostel also made it for us too...even without the wifi! I am finally seeing the charm of Vietnam.
