After months of planning the day of our travelling adventures had finally arrived!
We had already checked in online so assumed it would be easy enough, drop the bags off and go through security into the departure lounge ready for our 2pm flight. Wrong. Egypt Air were refusing to board us as we did not have proof of onward travel from Thailand.
The gentleman at the desk was very helpful and said they have extra checks, but was unsure what to do. He asked the lady next to him who was pretty rude and basically told us we couldn't board before walking away. At this point, I thought our travelling would be over before it started!
Thankfully, the Supervisor who came to resolve the issue saw sense. What we did have was proof of a flight from Singapore to Melbourne and our working holiday visas for Australia. The reason we did not have proof of onward travel was that we actually didn't know where we would be ourselves. We have six weeks in Asia before we go to Australia. We know that we won't be in Thailand for over 30 days (as that would require a visa), but haven't planned whether to move onto Vietnam or Cambodia after. On further research the below article is useful for anyone who does book a one way flight, just in case...

An hour later after what was not the best start, we were checked in and on our way to the first place that sold alcohol for a much needed glass of wine!
We flew from Heathrow to Cairo, then Cairo to Bangkok. Skyscanner was great for finding the best deals! Our flights cost around £330 each...bargain! While the food wasn't great and the film selection poor, the price we paid made it worthwhile! Unfortunately on the plane the little boy in front of me spilled his drink on my bag and feet and was then sick later on. Just my luck!
We arrived in Bangkok around 12.30pm Thursday 9 November (5.30am UK time) and made our way to our hostel (The Cube) from there. We used the Sky train to get there which cost £2.50 ish each for the both of us...much cheaper than a taxi which would have come in at around £15 without the toll bridge.
First impressions of our hostel are good! Location wise it is fantastic, around a five minute walk to the Sky train and Night Market. We have been put in a dorm for 10 people, but at the moment there are only five of us. We had a nap so I can confirm the beds are comfy enough and clean! Underneath the beds there is a large locker where you can safely store your valuables. The shower and toilet facilities are very clean. There are two showers and two toilets, but so far it hasn't been crowded at all. The shower is fine, not powerful, but hot water and a lot of it.
Immediately outside the hostel is the back of some food stalls, which is where the locals prepare the food and do the cleaning. It doesn't look particularly great, so not a great view, but for £76 between the two of us for four nights, it is perfect!
We have a few nights in Bangkok to explore, so I will hopefully blog again in the next few days on our time here :)
A further note to add for anyone who is contemplating travelling, in the final week running up to going I was absolutely terrified. I was emotional and anxious about the upcoming journey and I definitely had thoughts about pulling out due to missing my family so much! I went home for a week before and I did not want to leave! After check in at the airport was sorted that's when I started to relax a bit more. Even on the flight I was a little sad to be leaving.
