We set out for Kuala Lumpur on the bus from Penang and we were upset that it was such a short journey, 5 hours. We were transferred by minibus to the main bus station just a short way out from the town. When the bus arrived we had to check a few times that it was the one that we were supposed to be on.The coach was better than the first class section of an aeroplane! We had seats that reclined back until they were flat like a bed and we also had a TV in the back of the chair in front, which had about 25 movies, cartoons and TV shows to choose from in about 6 different languages. I watched Pirates of the Caribbean and the Jungle book. The bus was also practically empty a comfortable bargain ride at 35RM each. One of the shortest bus journeys and the most comfortable by far, every bus should be like this!!We were dropped off at the side of a main road, only having a vague idea of where we were, we spotted a starbucks so went in for a coffee and found out that we were in Chinatown the area best for us. I sat and used the internet while Wayne went out to find a room.He came back and had bumped into our Norwegian friends who had been here a couple of days, they were paying 100 RM for a basic room.Wayne had found a room for 80RM so we checked into, the hotel was new, clean and just around the corner from where we were dropped so not too far to walk with our bags. The other Chinatown rooms that Wayne checked out were apparently really grotty so we think we were lucky to find a room that we could negotiate price as we intended to stay a few nights before heading off to Malaysian Borneo. We had a look around the malls just around the corner and managed to buy some bits for the laptop including a new foldaway keypad for us to plug in so that we can use all of the buttons as some are still not working. That evening we took a walk to the Central Market which was just around the corner, our guidebook suggested that this was a good place to eat.The market is full of small shop units selling mainly handicrafts including Indian silk, souvenirs along with wooden and glass ornaments. We went upstairs in search of food and found a food court although it was really quiet and looked as though it was closing, so we decided to head through Petaling Street in Chinatown in search of a restaurant. We walked past all of the stalls selling excellent fakes past the food area, which were expensive food kitchens with tables and chairs in the street amongst the stalls. We walked further around the area and ended up in a quiet street so we decided to stop at a café style place for some noodles which was nice.We were surprised that in the heart of KL's Chinatown we could not find a Chinese restaurant. We then walked back through the market and spotted the Norwegian couple so we went with them for a drink in the reggae bar, we had a couple of beers and cocktails but it was all so much more expensive than in Thailand. We decided to move on and then could not find another bar in the area so ended up getting some cans from the 7-11.We were surprised that in a backpacker area of a capital city it was so difficult to find a bar and a restaurant!Day 2 - We got up and had a McDonald's breakfast of burgers and chips. We then walked down to the metro and took the train to the KLCC, which is where the PetronasTwinTowers are.Free tickets are issued daily allowing visitors to go to the viewing platform, a bridge halfway up joining the towers together. However there is a set allocation of tickets for each day, unfortunately they had run out today so we decided that we would have to get up early another day and see if we were lucky.Underneath the towers is the KLCC shopping centre, a 5 floor mall full of a wide range of shops and restaurants. Most of the shops were designer although there were some high street brands there.Instead of looking around the shops we decided to go to the aquarium which was the other side of the mall.It was pretty good and we enjoyed walking around looking at the fish, sharks, crabs etc. They also had a domed walkway so it was as if the fish and sharks were swimming around you. This end of the mall led out to a park area which had great views of the towers and was also a place to relax with lots of benches, fountains and also a paddling pool for kids.We went back in to the main mall for a look around a few of the shops and found a large food court on one of the floors. You could have eaten anything from Chinese, Indian, Malay, Thai, Italian, Kebabs, fast food the whole lot.We had a snack and then decided to go back on the metro to another area of the City called Bukit Bitang which was supposed to have a lot to do, however it was full of malls. We had a quick look around some of the electrical and shoe shops as these goods are good buys in KL.We then got the Metro back via the K Sentral station which links to the airport, so we at least knew how to get there for our flight. In the evening we had arranged to meet up with the Norwegian couple for a couple of drinks back in Bukit Bitang as this area was meant to be good for food and evening entertainment. However they got caught up and could not make it, so off we went on our own.All the restaurants in the area were chains like Hard Rock café and Planet Hollywood with a couple of expensive places mixed in.We had a good look around and passed about 5 malls before stopping at an outside bar for a beer.We then found an Indonesian restaurant to eat at.The food was not cooked to order but had been sitting in pans like in the food courts and there were not many other places to eat.The food was OK, but we were disappointed and have come to the conclusion that the places to eat are in the food courts in the shopping malls or big hotel restaurants. We couldn't find a normal bar either so a bit despondent we returned back to the hotel on the metro.Day 3 - We did not get up early enough to visit the towers so we decided that we would visit tomorrow. We went into the Central market for breakfast and ended up having a pasty each which was very nice, but strange for breakfast. We then walked to Mederka Square the area where the celebrations took place when Malaysia became independent. This area has some nice buildings and a very English feel as there is a cricket ground here with a mock tudor pavilion. The Malaysian flag is flying high at one end along with the Malaysia 2007 flag, celebrating the 50 years of nationhood. Here there was also the NationalHistoryMuseum, which was excellent and took us a good couple of hours to go around. There was the history of the going back to the beginning of civilisation in Malaysia, the tools and their way of life. The museum also focused heavily on the history of Malaysian Borneo as this is totally different to Peninsular Malaysia. The final part of the museum concentrated on the wars, British rule, independence and the Kings and Queens since this time.We then walked the short distance into Little India as it looked like there were lots of shops and we expected it to be very lively and cultural. It was fairly quiet and the shopping centres were geared up for Indian customers. We had a quick look around and got ourselves a fresh juice drink in the food court then walked through the market, where I managed to buy myself a pair of sunglasses.By the time we got back to Chinatown area we were feeling lazy and could not be bothered to do anything else so we had a look around the malls. That evening we went to a restaurant around the corner from where we were staying called Nandos which served Peri Peri chicken, a spicy sauce served in various strengths to spice up your chicken.I had medium spiced chicken pitta bread served with coleslaw.Wayne had a hot spiced chicken quarter with Chips and side dish.It was really enjoyable and when we finished we crossed the road to starbucks to have a coffee and use the internet to make some phone calls. Our last day saw us over sleep so there was no chance of getting tickets to the viewing platform which we were disappointed with but our own fault. We had another strange breakfast a Jacket potato as we still could not find a café to get breakfast fare. After breakfast we walked along Chinatown's Petaling Street and looked at the shops and the stalls. We managed to purchase some lovely shoes at on 3 pound per paid, I had 2 pairs and Wayne had 1.We decided that we should stop at this even though we could have sent a box home!We would never be able to carry any more extra shoes and bags and we had weight restrictions for our next set of flights. We spent the rest of the day sorting through our bags and throwing anything we did not need and updating the blog.I then walked around the central market and brought some postcards and had a look at some of the crafts for sale.In the evening we decided to go out early in search of some Malay food as we had not really sampled it yet.We ended up walking to Bukit Bitang, the city is not as big as it appears. We decided to eat as everyone else does and go to a food court in one of the malls. The variety was huge and I ended up having sushi and chicken with rice with a black pepper sauce with some sautéed vegetables.Once we had finished we were both full and had really enjoyed it, we were bit gutted that we had only had food court food this once, mainly because we were being fussy that will teach us.I don't think that either of us feels that we really did KL justice, it is a fantastic place for shopping and we could have brought heaps of electrical equipment, clothes, shoes, bags etc, but we just do not have the space to carry it.We also ran out of time to go up the PetronasTowers and we also didn't visit the KL Tower, our own lazy faults. We will have to go back and be a bit more organised.
