Sunday 7th February 2016.
Our first night aboard Spyglass is a bit of a disturbed night. It was quite breezy until 2a.m. and getting used to it, the noises of masts and the currents rocking our beautiful catamaran take some time, but from when things calmed down we slept well and felt quite rested and ready for a chilled day of sailing and to quote Scott, Awesomeness!
We have discussed the plan for the day and everything is decided on degrees of Awesomeness. The B.V.I.s are just the A word full stop. The views wherever we are, are utterly fantastic, the colour of the water, the sights of all the amazing vessels that ply these waters from tiny craft to the most amazing multi million pound super yachts. It just blows you away. The incredible thing is the laid back casualness of the people. So many folks we pass by must have mega bank accounts but we are all mere mortals sailing around, enjoying the views, no one is flash, we are all dressed in swimsuits or shorts and t-shirts, clothing does not distinguish who or what you are and footwear is either flip flops or bare feet. This life suits me very well.
We are sailing off today firstly to Virgin Gorda and to visit the Baths. These are an unusual formation of gigantic granite rocks and one of the most visited anchorages around. They are situated on the southern tip of Virgin Gorda and as Scott takes us as close as possible in the tender we all slip over the side and into the waters to swim to shore to explore. Peter and I once on the beach head in the opposite direction to everyone else and meander our way along a difficult path strewn with enormous boulders to Devils beach. It's just a load of various sizes of rocks where visitors have reassembled them to make sculptures on top of other bigger rocks. I place 4 small stones and shells above one another and from a distance I realise I've created a vision of a Scout in his old fashioned hat, looking out to sea. There is a really funny sight of a skeleton made out of rocky debris and seaweed. It's a fascinating place and totally remote except for the odd, very beautiful blue and brown lizard that wanders by.
Next we start walking along the beach towards where the group has gone and here we want to explore The Baths. The seas wash in between all these huge rock structures and a trail has been formed and there have been wooden steps and rope pull-ups added to aid the process of getting through them. All this area is a designated marine park and therefore protected as such and you can only moor onto special places so not to hurt any of the coral around. It's a beautiful, albeit busy area, with a tiny bar on one of the beaches as well as a guy selling t-shirts and towels. We have a brilliant time exploring and eventually get back to Spyglass after a swim or snorkel we are ready for a impromptu lunch and a sail to our mooring at the Bitter End Yacht Club for the rest of the day and overnight.
It's Super Bowl Sunday and the Crawl Pub where we are hoping to eat tonight is heaving with Americans ready to enjoy their Big Sports night of the year. Some of our group walk up into the hills above the dock to enjoy the views as the sun goes down. I stay near the bar and explore a bit of wifi time and a good chat and catch up with our new Swiss friends. Some of the group stay and watch the first half of the game whilst eating American fast food snacks, but Scott takes Peter, myself and the Swiss girls back to Spyglass where we enjoy good showers, then a relaxed meal of pasta and salad with a glass or two of vino and the sun sets and nightfall shows the beauty of the area with Saba rock and Prickly Pear island along side us and the lights of all the boats moored up. Life is blissful.
