Kel: We made it! We travelled back in time. We left NZ at 5pm and got into Santiago, Chile at 1pm, 4 hours earlier on the same bloomin day! We were unbelievably dazed and confused. Never felt anything like it. We went back 16 hours in total so our days were flipped on their heads.
We slept as soon as we hit our hostel and didn't really start to explore Santiago until the evening. It wasn't Argentina, we had one of our best meals in South America so far. Controversial perhaps, but two massive slabs of bloody veal with some gorgeous wine for about twenty quid. A lovely waiter was very patient with our rubbish Spanish and we had a really nice evening. It's a seriously heavy polluted city and we felt like we had hayfever the whole time we were there.
The next day after a rubbish sleep we headed out for a wander around the city. It could have been Spain. There were some pretty buildings and we went to a very interesting museum about the indigenous population around central and south america. We ate empanadas (local pastry filled with .... wait for it.... beef) and took it easy really. We had a bit of a panic that we hadn't booked anything for Easter weekend and were told that everything would be booked and busy. We were advised to head out to the bus station to pre book tickets so that's what we did... in rush hour. About 20 mins later, Matthew had his wallet stolen in a busy tube station. Totally gutting. Mad rush to try and phone UK banks to cancel cards etc and then we ended up going to this wee bar and having some chips with beef stew on the top with an egg on top of that. Kind of comfort food but we were still raging. Time to leave Santiago.
