Day 34 Kingston to Toronto
We started the day heading back into Kingston to get some photos that we had not been able to take the day before due to the position of the sun.
We went up to Fort Henry which unfortunately closed to tourism the day before. Many tourist venues close once all the uni students go back to study. We were able to walk into the quadrangle and the connected battlements. However, all the stores surrounding the quadrangle were closed.
Once again we opted for a scenic drive. We headed toward the little town of Picton in Prince Edward County. As this is on a peninsular we travelled across on the vehicular ferry. Margaret, the host at our Airbnb had told us of the drive and mentioned heading up the hill once off the ferry. You climb an elevation of 100 metres and not only have a lovely view of the surrounding area but find what is called the Lake on the Mountain. Once again lovely clear waters fill this beautiful lake.
We headed into Picton and had a lovely coffee and cake for late morning tea. They are currently doing up the main street with imitation gas lights and restoring the old shop fronts. We have since learned that in Ontario a law was passed that you can do what you like to the interior of the building but the historical façade must be maintained.
Continuing on we were surprised at the amount of traffic leaving Toronto on a Monday afternoon. In fact, more was leaving than heading into the city. Another interesting observation is when a school bus stops and its lights are flashing traffic in both directions stop. In Ontario the pedestrians have right of way. If a pedestrian crosses against the lights and is hit too bad for the driver as they will be still held responsible for the accident. This tends to cause lots of traffic delays in the city.
We arrived at our Airbnb accommodation late afternoon. Once again a sub-basement apartment. This one is very modern and Darren and Derek had stocked the fridge with lots of goodies for us. We still needed to go for a walk, 1km, to the grocery store to some food for dinner. Tonight's dinner was rissoles and veggies.
