John Knox's House is open to the public.
This house is located about half way along the Royal Mile. It's heyday was in the 1500s & 1600s, but was considered "rundown" after Newtown opened. It was owned by James Mossman, a jeweler & goldsmith, as well as the Keeper of the Royal Mint for the Stuart kings & queens. While John Knox wanted Mary to abdicate, Mossman was behind a rebellion, & actually orchestrated a siege in the Edinburgh Castle for 3 years. Ironically, during the siege, John Knox lived here. His study overlooks the street.
