This was a great place to start! There has been a royal castle on this lava rock since King David in the 12th century. It sits right in the "plug" of an extinct volcano. It's where Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to her son who became James VI of Scotland, & James I of England. It's quite a story! She, like many royal princesses, became a pawn in a political & religious struggle for power.
