Jean de la Valette was a French nobleman & the 49th Grand Master of the Order of Malta, from 1557-1568. He had already fought against the Turks at Rhodes, which resulted in the Knights being expelled from Rhodes. He was captured & became a galley slave for Barberry pirates, but eventually was ransomed. He was elected "Captain General of the Order's Galleys".
