The Market Gate of Miletus, 2 AD, from the west coast of Anatolia, present day Turkey
This "gate" is 30 meters wide, 5 meters deep, and 16 meters tall, and was built in the reign of Hadrian (120-130 AD). Miletus was an ancient Persian trading city, 220 acres in circumference, and was eventually conquered by Alexander the Great, by the Romans, and in the 14th century, by the Turks. The city was discovered in the 19th century by German archeologists, and brought back to the Pergamon Museum to be rebuilt and displayed. Once located on the sea, the site is now 10 kilometers away from it.
