We woke up nice and early and headed down to the river. Today we were travelling by long boat to take a picturesque ride down the Ou and Mekong Rivers. The boats were like long wooden canoes with a roof over it. We were taking two boats. One boat had seats similar to a childs car seat and the other one had small, child-sized wooden chairs. The boat I was going in had the small wooden chairs so I was already feeling hard done by but then i was the second to last to get on the boat and all the chairs had been taken! I ended up sitting on the floor at the back with Kenny. It turned out that wasnt so bad as we had room to stretch our legs. It was a cool morning with the breeze blowing into our faces. We passed many villages at the side of the river and saw people with small canoes fishing in the river. After a while the constant noise of the engine that we were sat next to began to get slightly annoying. A few times we had to get out and walk along the river bank as we were to heavy to travel through the shallow water. It was nice to stretch our legs.
After about five hours cruising down the river we stopped at the famous Pak Ou Cave with its hundreds of Buddha statues. Our local guide explained to us what some of the different positions of the Buddahs meant. We then walked to another smaller cave where it was much darker and it had more statues.
We then got back into the boats for another hour to travel into the centre of the Unesco World Heritage List city of Luang Prabang. I was quite pleased to get off the boat as it had given me a headache from the noise and the fumes. We checked into a very nice hostel. It was a dorm room but the beds were really big and spacious. We had the opportunity to go to a waterfall where you could swim and swing across it on a rope. I wasnt feeling too good so I decided to stay behind. There must have been something wrong with me as I went to bed at 4:30 and didnt eat anything!
