Today I didn't mind getting up early so much, as we went glacier walking! We arrrived at the Fox Glacier guide point and got kitted out with walking boots and socks - not the most attractive outfit! After a long hike up a mountain and through a rainforest (I have no idea what it was called, I was too busy trying to breathe!) we arrived at the glacier. We had to attach crampons to our boots to give grip on the ice and tuck our combats into our socks - even hotter...

More driving... Today we left Christchurch to drive to Franz Josef Township. On the way we drove through Porters Pass and Arthurs Pass, which are amazing mountain ranges. We also saw the site where Narnia was filmed, and stopped off at the New Zealand Jade factory. Our accomodation in Franz Josef was beautiful; it was right in front of the snow capped mountains and surrounded by parts of the rainforest. We had New Zealand lamb for dinner, which felt a bit wrong ...

Come on England! We had another early start today as we travelled on the ferry to Picton on the South Island. My first impression was that it is much prettier here than the North Island, with really varying scenery. We had a long day of driving, making stops to see a seal colony and for a 'comfort break'. Waitangi Day Today we were free to do what we wanted, so we had a big lie in! Then we went to the Te Papa museum, which is free, and has lots of exhibits based on the history of New Zealand. We also had a look aroud the harbour, where there was a rowing race happening. Wellington is a really nice walkable city, but as it was Waitangi Day (New Zealand Day) not much was open. 'Kick back and relax" Getting up at 6.30am this morning was difficult after last night, but somehow we managed it! Our tour manager kept telling us to 'kick back and relax', which wasn't helpful!
