We've been home for nearly 2 months, I can't believe how quickly the time has gone. I know it's a bit late but I wanted to finish the last part of our story...
Luang Prabang in Laos was beautiful, you can see why it's a UNESCO city. The streets are so pretty, full of market stalls and amazing temples, we had a very happy, chilled out time eating nice food and wandering round. We also met Lejla and Simon and had nice massages and pedicures, although Sean was a bit surprised to find out afterwards that his masseuse was only 13! After a couple of days we took the slow boat to Thailand. I wasn't too happy the first morning as I sat in the cold on a very hard wooden bench but the 9 hours passed quite quickly and the scenery along the Meekong was very picturesque. We spent a night in Pak Beng, had dinner at a little Laotian restaurant with a friendly owner, then we headed out for our second day of boating. We sat on the floor that day which was much more comfortable, chatted to people and read lots. Getting on and off the boat along a plank and up sandy hills was a bit difficult but apart from that it was very relaxing. In Huay Xai we had dinner with people from the boat and then took a long boat to Thailand the next day.
In Thailand we took a couple of buses through Chaing Rai to Chaing Mai and arrived on the Kings birthday. The whole city was decorated in his favourite colour yellow, lanterns and pictures of the king filled the streets. We met Lejla and Simon again and spent another few days with them. We went to a Muay Thai boxing night, I expected it to be a bit seedy and sweaty but it was very relaxed and the whole room smelled of tiger balm! We spent a lovely day on an organic farm doing a thai cooking course, the food was lovely, we were especially proud of our spring rolls! Sean and I also did a one day trek with some elephant riding and bamboo rafting. It was great, slightly more adventurous for sean as he had to ride on the elephant's neck and then stand up and steer the raft, not ideal when we went down rapids and under low trees but luckily sean discovered some hidden punting skills!
From Chaing Mai we flew back to Malaysia for another quick visit. We had an early Christmas Day which was really nice, Robin cooked an amazing roast and we got to have a few more Samuel cuddles! After that we changed from backpackers into holiday makers for our last 2 weeks in Thailand.
We spent a few days on Koh Lanta in a nice resort, had drinks in the beach bars, had some amazing massages and got upgraded to a room with a jacuzzi - v nice, went a bit overboard with the bath bubbles though! From there we went to Railay Bay and stayed in a resort between the East and West beaches. Railay was fun to explore, we climbed a crazy steep hill for an amazing view, spent time on the 3 beaches and discovered lots of hidden bars in amongst the trees. We saw more thai boxing, lots of fire dancing and some amazing sunsets.
Our last stop was Bangkok where we treated ourselves to some time in The Banyan Tree hotel, it was amazing, like a spa with different incense everyday, a gorgeous outdoor pool, lots of nice bars and restaurants and an awesome breakfast. We didn't see much of Bangkok but we did spend a day at Asia's biggest market, Chatuchak and we managed to catch a lady boy show too.
Our flight back home landed on Christmas morning at 8.30. We were excited to see everyone but we couldn't believe our trip had finished. It has just been the most amazing 9 months, better than I could ever have imagined! Thanks for sharing our journey and for all the nice messages along the way!
Lots of love Vicky xx
