We arrived in Sihanoukville early in the morning all dirty and smelly after the homestay. As soon as we checked into the hotel I spent 30 minutes in the shower, I was that desperate to get clean I left my bag on the bus. One more blonde incident to add to the list! Thankfully Savath saved the day (and my hair straighteners) by getting my bag back - another reason why he is 5* Savath!
All through Cambodia we had to cover ore shoulders and knees to respect the local culture but thankfully as Sihanoukville is a beach town anything goes! It was so funny when we met for lunch every single person have their shoulders and knees out, it was like no uniform day at school.
In the afternoon some of the group and I headed to the private beach, when we arrived it was hard to believe we were still in Cambodia. The sand was so white and smooth and the ocean was see-through. It felt like we were in a 5* resort in the Caribbean. Of course we had to celebrate with a few cocktails, cue several Pina Coladas and Margaritas later and we stumped back to the hotel with a hint of a tan. That night we had half price cocktails and I really can't remember the rest....
Day two in Sihanoukville and we took a boat out to a nearby island. It wasn't the clearest of days but it was perfect for sunbathing. We stopped the boat for snorkelling and fishing (I much perfect fish dead) and then had a BBQ on the beach with our catch of the day. Day two was also party night. A little sun and half price cocktails add up a massive hangover!
On our last day I headed back to the private beach for some serious tanning (and cocktails) and as it had been such a stressful day (and the hangover was kicking in) I went for a massage. Only this wasn't an ordinary massage, no stop thinking that, you'll fell bad when you read on.... The massage was by a blind lady. In Cambodia there is a charity called Seeing Hands which trains and employs blind people on how to massage. As there are so little opportunities for blind people this organisation allows them to live undependably and more importantly gives them the skills to support themselves. The massage was excellence, one of the best I've had since I been away and I've had a few. That night was our last in Sihanoukville, so yes you guessed it more cocktails!
Seriously if it's all doom and gloom back home with the economic downturn and you don't know where to invest your money, invest it here. Five thousands pounds will get you a nice little bar on the beachfront in Sihavoukville, give it five years and this place will be the new "IT" destination to travel to. There is already a buzz around the town with some really cool bars and restaurants and now would be the time to invest before everyone finds out how fantastic it is. And if you are looking for someone to run for you...... just ask!
