Van Trip 2007
Day 9
Kilometres travelled today......231
Distance from Home.....798 Kilometres
We left Goondiwindi at 9:20am, it was a cloudy and overcast morning but not raining.
We travelled on the Barwon Highway to Nindigully and then the Carnarvon Highway to St. George. The road surface was a bit ordinary and we had a rough ride. The numerous on-coming Road Trains made for an interesting journey.
Nindigully is located on the Moonie River, 515 kilometres south-west of Brisbane. The 1999 Australian film Paperback Hero starring Hugh Jackman and Claudia Karvan was filmed there.
The Nindigully Pub, built in 1864, is believed to be one of Queensland's longest continually licenced premises. It was a Cobb & Co changing station between the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
We arrived at the Top Tourist Pelican Rest Van Park about 12:15pm, and settled on to site 3 at $25.20 per night. The weather was cloudy with some light rain. The park is situated on the northern approach to St George. As well as 600 trees and shrubs planted around the park there are 30 grass drive through and 15 other huge powered sites. The camp kitchen, which features free barbecues, fridges and cooking facilities, is a popular meeting place with ample seating and pleasant views.
St George is 390 kilometres due west of Brisbane, and is the administrative centre for the Shire of Balonne. It was named by Major Thomas Mitchell who crossed the Balonne River on St George's Day, 23 April 1846.
It sits at the junction of several highways including the Castlereagh , Moonie , Carnarvon and Balonne. The only crossing of the Balonne River is the Andrew Nixon Bridge on the Balonne Highway. St George is on the Balonne River which is reputedly an excellent fishing site for fish such as the Murray Cod.
The town was severely affected by flooding in March 2010, with the river peaking at 13.5 metres, and again in December 2010 – January 2011.
Flooding once again occurred in February 2012, when there was a possibility of the river reaching 15 metres. About 2,500 residents were evacuated on 4th and 5th February to evacuation centres in Dalby and Brisbane. A temporary levee was built on the morning of 5th February. The River reached a height of 13.85 metres on Tuesday 7th February.
One of St George's most famous sons was Warrant Officer Leonard Victor Waters. This man showed his true St George spirit by becoming the only known Aboriginal fighter pilot to serve in WWII. His name is remembered on a pilots' memorial opposite the St George Visitor Information Centre on the Balonne River.
The town gained national attention with the election of local accountant Barnaby Joyce to the Australian Senate following the 2004 Federal Election.
