Eggs! Everywhere. Stayed in Taupo on the 3rd then up to Rotorua last night. As I mentioned last time in my geography lesson - there'll be a test later kids - this area is a huge volcanic zone, a part of the world where the earth's crust is at its thinnest. The result of this geothermal jiggery-pokery? - sulphur and various noxious chemicals and gases bubbling up through the ground, steam escaping in amongst the trees either side of the road, the Pohutu geyser shooting superheated water 30 metres into the air, active mudpools, and this overriding odour of mouldy omelette. All pretty cool stuff.
We went to 3 places where all this earth nonsense goes on - Craters of the Moon, Opakei Korako (a self-guided tour on an island, the best place) and Te Puia, where we were also welcomed in the traditional Maori way of sticking your tongue out, dancing around with a stick, slapping your man boobs and rolling your eyes like a lunatic.
Next stop Raglan, bring on the beach. C x
