We had the morning at leisure in Aguas Calientes (literally "warm waters"), named after the hot spring baths which are available in town. Originally a farming community from around 1910, Aguas Callientes grew along with the railroad and is now filled with shops, restaurants, and hotels for the many visitors to Machu Picchu.
Our hotel offered a couple of naturalist led walks, and we signed up for a morning bird watching stroll through the rain forest, along the Urubamba, where we saw many more incredible birds than our cameras could capture. We had the guide to ourselves, and he was excellent at both spotting and naming the birds.
Later, we still had time to explore the little town, spending quite a bit of time in a jewelry/stone shop operated by a Quechuan craftsman whose family made all of the jewelry. After a great lunch at Indio Feliz (Indian/French fusion) and a brief stop at a potter's studio, we were back on the train for the return to Cusco. The following morning we returned to Lima for one last afternoon of exploration before a farewell dinner wrapped up our adventure in Peru.
