11/3 Another driving day, we made stops in four states, all at the same time. Heading south toward Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, we detoured for a drive up and down the amazing Moki Dugway, a three-mile gravel road to the top of a mesa, the Dugway ascends via a series of ten-degree switchbacks. Thursday began with our goodbye to Capitol Reef after a stop for some roadside petroglyphs and a nice hike up to Hickman's Natural Bridge which afforded excellent views of the Capitol Reef Rock. 11/1 Wednesday was primarily a driving day as we set off to explore some of the immense Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Utah route 12 is considered one of the more scenic roads in America, and we were not disappointed. We arrived into Grand Junction after the best connection ever in Denver—adjacent gates with a Starbucks in between them—picked up the rental, and headed west, arriving at Capitol Reef National Park early in the afternoon. We had the morning at leisure in Aguas Calientes (literally "warm waters"), named after the hot spring baths which are available in town. Originally a farming community from around 1910, Aguas Callientes grew along with the railroad and is now filled with shops, restaurants, and hotels for the many visitors to Machu Picchu.
