As the day wore on, I left Sparkbrook and headed South, to the place called Rubery. In the old days, Rubery was synonymous with a psychiatric hospital, which I think has now closed. This is our kid's new band in rehearsal. They are currently called V60, but they are planning to change the name since V60 stands for Vintage 1960, but not surprisingly audiences don't seem to make the connection (although their repertoire is entirely from that period). The lead singer's called Bill. Rather incredibly, Bill had been a singer in my brother's first band (which was called Force Five). I last saw Bill about 50 years ago, when he kindly gave me an "Airfix" model of an Australian Air Force fighter plane, called a "Boomerang", which he knew I'd like, since, at that age (10), I was really into models and the like. I told Bill this story, but his reaction, I thought, was disappointingly ambivalent.
