January 22 2015 - Amedeo Modigliani 1884 - 1920 Madame Z (1918)
Next in my tour, I examined Madame Z, by Modigliani, a picture I have admired for many years. When I was about 16, I saw a dramatisation of the life of Modigliani on the BBC. At the time I was a budding hippy and attracted to those characters who in some way or other failed to accept mainstream society. Modigliani fitted this bill, but he also had this completely unique and unmistakable style, which I have copied on a number of occasions with limited success. Modigliani died penniless of TB, his body ravaged by alcohol abuse and dare I say it, this is another characteristic which holds an attraction for me, although I can say unequivocally that that is not a route I wish to follow.
