The next stage of my sentimental journey to Birmingham took me to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, one of Britain’s finest galleries. The above painting, which is exhibited there, is, in my opinion, a masterpiece. Its beauty was actually pointed out to me by my late father and without his interest in this particular work, I don’t think I would ever have noticed it. In particular, even this snap shot illustrates the supreme skill of the Dutch artist, Jacob Ochterveldt, in replicating the texture and translucent qualities of fine silk in the dress of the student musician. In relation to the point made in the opening item of this album (see January 01), about inherited traits, or desires, whilst it may be obvious that I have inherited some of my father’s artistic interest (and, I hope, abilities), there are further subtle common traits, such as an ability to examine things in prosaic detail, something which reveals an inner world which is only available to those who care to look. I would say thanks to my Dad for this observational insight, except not only was the passing on of this characteristic not consciously undertaken, he also had no choice in the matter.
