"The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial in Ypres, Belgium dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown". That is the opening description of the Menin Gate, as per Wikipedia. In fact, it may be a semantic point, but you will note that the gate is actually dedicated to the missing dead AND "Those who stood here". Exactly what that last line means, I'm not completely sure, but perhaps it is also dedicated to those who fought in an around here, but who survived (like Grandad). I note this fine distinction because, in my opinion, not enough is made of the sacrifice the survivors actually made. In fact, it could be argued that those who died in some ways were better off - my Grandad's experiences as detailed in the first slide were so unbelievably awful that it is inconceivable that his life was not permanently scarred by them.
