28 August 2012 - Ancient Graffiti
South West of Worth Matravers, perched on a cliff top at the end of a promentary, is a small, square shaped, and ancient church. All over the walls and stone pillars, there's old graffiti. The oldest date I saw carved deep into the stone (with some skill) was 1666. I like the way those peoples, from a very different time, still desired to make their mark, as do modern day graffiti artists. I wonder if this mark making is some kind of metaphor, a way of registering one’s own existence in the context of the inevitable march of time and the temporal brevity of life. Or, it might just be gratuitous vandalism; make your choice, buddy boy.
