There was, I think, a Carry On film, where the central character was a politician whose manifesto proposed no taxes, offered free everything, and guaranteed peace and prosperity for all forever. In the Carry On fantasy world, Jim Dale, as PM Wright-Burke got in by a landslide. Natalie’s trying the same thing, except she’s basing it on a wonderful sounding moral authority oozing goodness and generosity. She said she wanted to actually increase overseas aid, which is great, but there was no cheering. In fact there was muffled, but distinct noises of approval when that panto villain Farage suggested the opposite. I think the only chance for the Greens is to disregard niceness in favour of threats that if we ignore environmental issues, like climate change, we’ll all die a hideous death. She’s not doing this – she thinks people naturally want to do good things, and I agree except, they don’t want to pay for it.

Giles I saw her clueless performance being interviewed by Andrew Neill. He backed off being cruel to her but at the end asked her if taking part in the Leaders' debates was such a great idea.
