As I plodded on with the debate, I got a bit bored and started playing scrabble on my phone. My main objective in scrabble has been not to win, per se, but to get seven letter words. Early into this game, I got an opportunity which not only gave me 80 odd points with a seven letter jobby, once again, it highlighted how the letter “aitch” was spelt and in doing so, it again drew attention to that blatant pronunciation error by some who insist on saying “haitches”. I’m a self confessed snob on this – I also look at the way people hold their knife and fork and, I can tell you, people who say “haitch” also hold their cutlery in a particular way.
