My journey back to PP was pretty uneventful. I slept most of the way after so many late nights and early starts in Siem Reap. Was good to arrive and get checked in on Lakeside, (I know, I was recommended not to stay here but had friends staying there so made sense, plus I liked it since when you were out the back on the Lake, (well more of a pond or large puddle!), it was very chilled and you could forget you were in PP - almost!). We had a few very chilled nights, watched the footy, played more games. Was fun and consequently I did spend an extra day which has eaten into my time for Vietnam but hey, was always going to be a rush here. Hopefully South America won't be so rushed..... And besides, it set me up well for Vietnam in terms of having people I will know on the way and having sorted out the boat and not the bus!
I loved every minute of Cambodia. It's an amazing Country made even more amazing by the people. They have been through so much and experienced so much atrocity, (seriously, unless you have visited S21 or the Killing Fields at Choeng Ek you have no idea just what happened here just a little over 30 years ago). I was considerably shocked by what I saw, read and heard. Over 3 million Cambodians were tortured, abused and finally executed during the 4 years of the Khmer Rouge regime. There are around 380 killings fields across Cambodia totalling nearly 20000 mass graves of men, women and children. There were several foreigners also murdered as part of the genocide including 9 Europeans. What these people endured prior to being driven to a killing field and executed is simply horrific. I have never experienced anything like S21 or Choeng Ek before and I doubt ever will again and all of us who went there were pretty speechless that night.
This just makes it even more incredible that the locals are so friendly, so welcoming and the way the Country has picked itself back up since Liberation day over 30 years ago is immense. I guess that will be my abiding memory of Cambodia. The photos for PP do contain some from S21 and Choeng Ek. I didn't take many and did not take any of the most distubring images.
