We flew through the night from Dubai to Kuala Lumpur and were supposed to have a tarmac stopover in Mumbai, India (as we did on the way over). As the in flight map got to above Mumbai we were still at 30,000 ft, so we realized there was not going to be a stopover. It was not until we were in our hotel room in KL and turned the news on, that we realized there was a very good reason not to land in Mumbai. It was the night that extremist gunmen took control of several buildings, including the Taj Palace Hotel, putting Mumbai as a city under siege, with many dead and injured.
Looking back, whilst at the airport before we took off, we noticed groups of Indians sitting on the floor surrounding notebook computers and guess now that the drama had started to unfold and that the passengers that were to be on our flight, with a destination of Mumbai had been bumped to another flight, as a safety measure until more was known about what was happening.
Bunniks Tours had organized the Malaysia part of our trip also, and our hotel in KL was beautiful and right in the heart of the city. The driver who picked us up from the airport was full of info and as we travelled towards the city, we saw some new suburbs that didn't seem to be occupied. He explained that the rules are a developer has to plant the trees in enough time for them to be a certain height and to build all the infrastructure, as in schools and shops etc before he can sell off the homes. Apparently this developer had not allowed time for the trees!
We had an interesting experience in KL called a fish spa. A variety of fish, reputedly from Turkey, are used to nibble of the dry skin on your feet. It is the strangest experience to put your feet into a pool of fish and have them nibble away. Once you get used to the feeling, it is quite pleasant, they really DO remove all the hard dry skin!
