We woke to heavy fog which didn't dissipate till well after 11am. The landscape was softened by the mist rising and falling again throughout the morning. Through traditional pastures with merino sheep grazing to the heavily irrigated lands with orchards, cotton, grapes and vegetables, we passed Narrandera and Darlington Point, heading west.
Approaching Hay, the grazing properties returned, the lushness of the irrigation area long past. Large herds of black cattle were being pushed along the 'Long Paddock' often accompanied by a single man and three dogs. Surprisingly, Hay boasted a winery, Ruberto's, and we had seen grapes planted along the highway: they seem to be grown everywhere now. But dry paddocks with sheep and emus were the usual sight.
Past Hay, the highway veers to the south and heads into green countryside again. Mildura on the banks of the Murray is quite large and promised a campsite on its banks. We scored a site overlooking the river lined with huge River Red Gums and enjoyed the evening sunset over the water.
