At the western end of the George Gill Range is Kings Canyon. The Canyon Rim walk, a 6km trek up the escarpment and following the rim in a circle afforded spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and of the canyon depths, tops and walls. This deep slash in the rocks allows Kings Creeks to meander through vertical walls of white sandstone stained red from the dust and the broken scree from the red sandstone layer below it tumbling down into the valley. The valley holds within it an oasis of cool rock pools and (currently) dry river beds supporting lush vegetation including tall stately palm trees. The walk is popular and we joined a veritable throng of hikers. The reds of the rocks, the whites of the ghost gums, the greens and greys of the leaves sang against the clear blue sky in the high morning sun. A fantastic experience.
We stayed the night at Kings Creek Station where the owners have set up a bush campground in one part of their huge cattle property. We had a great site with our own fire-pit and a shelter with sink and water and table and seats. In the evening we walked to the top of the hill to watch the sunset over the mountains. A herd of camels was casually wandering through the place, quite a large group with the juveniles staying close to their mothers.
A perfect spot but for the backpacking group on a bus tour that decided that making as much noise as possible as they packed up at 3.30am to get underway was quite OK!
