Once we arrived in Santiago we had to get a tube and then a taxi to our hostel, but we eventually made it and after chilling in the lounge to watch a film, headed off to bed. The next day the weather was pretty gloomy, but as we only had two days in Santiago we wanted to try and make the most of it. So we decided to do a walking tour of the city to see as much as we could and headed off late morning. We didn't make it very far before deciding we should really do a quick blog update as we were getting very far behind. And then after our internet session, we decided it was time for lunch so we went to a tiny cafe nearby that sold yummy empenadas. Eventually we started off properly on our walk, which took us over the river, through a lovely park set on a hill, and onto the main street near the plaza, before it started chucking it with rain and we decided to give up and go to the cinema! It was still raining once the film had finished, so we caught the tube back to near our hostel and found a cheap restaurant to have dinner.
The next day the weather was much nicer, thankfully, and after checking out of our hostel, we went back to the little cafe we had been to the day before for a late breakfast, and to meet our friend Jo. We had gone our separate ways after crossing the Chilean border, but had arranged to meet up again in Santiago before we flew to New Zealand and she flew to Easter Island!! After brekkie, we went for another walk around the city to see the bits we had missed the day before, including the plaza (in the sunshine) and a big and smelly fish market! After saying our goodbyes to Jo and parting ways again, we went back to the hostel to collect our bags and make our way to the airport. It was very sad to eventually leave South America - it is such a beautiful and diverse continent and definitely worth a return trip there to see the millions of things we didn't get to see this time round. But good things always come to an end... our flight left Santiago at 10.50pm for a long and tedious 13 hour flight to the land of skydives, bungys, Lord of the Rings and Kiwis!
