What a beautiful place. It was around 28 degrees when we arrived, just nice, cooler than Thailand. We stayed in a guesthouse in the centre of Luang Prabang run by a family that made us feel so welcome.
On our first day we hired bicycles to cycle round Luang Prabang, that was a laugh as we haven't ridden a bike since we were about 10. It's so scenic, beautiful mountains, very green and so many butterflies. We stopped to have a drink in a bar that overlooked the Mekong River and then got a long tail boat and did the sunset cruise along the river.
The next day we went to the Kuang Si waterfall which was so beautiful, crystal clear waters and we visited a bear sanctuary. We even went elephant trekking - it was hilarious, we had to wear these stupid straw hats as it was so hot in the jungle. We think we must have had Grandma elephant, she was really slow and kept walking into the trees so we got covered in scratches from the branches and had all sorts of creepy crawlies falling on our heads.
On our last day we were having breakfast relaxing on our guesthouse terrace overlooking the Mekong River when suddenly there was all this commotion and an announcement. The owner of the Guesthouse came running outside shouting at everyone to 'hurry inside as there was a BOMB' (well that's what we could make out in his broken English). We all went inside the guesthouse a little confused and on edge, all of us travellers were looking at eachother wondering what an earth was going on - then out of know where there was this huge explosion, it was so loud, the ground literally shook and there was major panic. We thought it must be a terrorist attack! The owner was trying to calm everyone down.... It turned out that a fisherman found a bomb in the river, close to where we were staying and it was a controlled explosion (thanks for the warning)! Apparently the bomb was from 1975 when there was trouble between some locals and the current government. Apart from this incident Laos has been our fav part of Asia.
