After the Kakadu NP weekend I wanted to relax a bit and decided to watch a couple of Aussie movies I usually don't have the opportunity to back in the US. As soon as the sun comes up the heat returns. Even though it's technically still Wintertime. So we got up early, took a 'pointless' shower and hit the road again. After "careful" consideration we decided to pack a tent, get enough food and water and hit the road to Kakadu NP. The park is about 3 hours to the east at the border to Arnhem Land. Passing 2 meter high cathedral termite mounds, floodplains, bushlands, rainforests and crocodile infested rivers we drove all the way to Ubirr, the northern part of the East Alligator region. Finally I got to see The Reef! :) What an awesome day! The Backpackers shuttle took us to the Reef Fleet Plaza, the Marina from where all our boats depart for the Great Barrier Reef. After about 90 min we reached the Outer Reef and put our wetsuits on. Jumping into the water was like landing on another world. A Wonderworld! Once again got up early this morning to catch the 7AM bus to Cairns. The final one on this trip. Passing endless bushlands and vast sugar cane plantations. Arrived in Cairns 6PM and checked into the lovely Tropic Days Backpackers. Easily the best I have been so far in Australia.
