Peaceful, relaxing village situated north on the island of Zanzibar. It took us 1 hour to drive there from Stone Town. I enjoyed walking on the white sandy beach which stretches for miles and watching locals fish at low tides. Being able to eat freshly caught fish was a real bonus and I particularly enjoyed king fish with locally grown spices...yummy

Chapwani Island is also known as Gtave Island and even Prison Island by the locals. Chapwani is a small island opposite Zanzibar city (30 minutes boat ride). It is now privately owned but you can still visit some parts of it. It used to be a prison for slaves ( hence the reason why the locals call it "prison island" ) awaiting transportation someone else. It is now a haven for tortoise and the last count totalled 195 !

Stone Town was my first port of call. Nessling in the middle of Zanzibar City along the Ocean, it is the Historical centre with the Old Fort and the souks. Zanzibar was famous for its spice trade ( cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and pepper ). These spices are very much part of every day cooking on the island.
