Sun 17th & Mon 18th Nov (Week 8)
Sun 17th - Had a wonderful day at the Argentina side of Iguassu Falls today. Caught the local bus to the park, and arrived in time for the first train around the park at 8:30am. Headed straight to the main attraction - the Devils Throat which was a good mini-train ride away, followed by a 1100m walkway across the rivers and falls. It was absolutely stunning, just so big you couldn't take it all in, but also a lot of spray so you couldn't see the bottom, and we got soaked ! Then we walked around the Lower Circuit (2.5km) which we both felt had the better views of the large basin of falls. It looked like CGI - it was so perfect and large, it felt like you were watching tv ! We were extremely lucky that the river height was just low enough for us to take the shuttle across to San Martin island for more trails and viewpoints. Apparently it is only open 2-3months a year, and hadn't been open since May ! We then walked the Upper Circuit trail (650m) to view the falls from the top, and finally back to the Devils Throat for one final view before heading home at 4:30pm. Very long day, miles of walking, and both fell asleep on the bus home! Then, a bit stupidly we had already booked the Moonlight Walk which they only run for 5 nights a month, and tonight was full moon, so we thought it would be perfect. However, it was basically exactly what we'd already done twice today - train to the Devils Throat, the 1km walk there and back and just viewing the waterfalls in moonlight. Sounds great, but difficult to photograph, got soaked with the spray and not back to the hostel until 1:30am !
Mon 18th - Caught the local bus for the short ride to the border, crossed immigration, and entered Brazil. Dropped our bags at the hostel in Foz do Iguassu, and caught another bus to the Brazilian side of the falls. All that seemed to take a while (an hour waiting at immigration for the bus, the clocks go forward an hour, and we spent another hour trying to find a cash point to give us Reals ! ) so we only got to the falls at 2:30pm having left the hostel at 9am. Luckily its much smaller this side, with just one walkway, but still spectacular with our favourite view across to all the main falls. Spent 2.5 hours there enjoying the views from more different angles.
I can see why the falls are one of the New 7 Wonders, and the parks have been done so well. You get a great overall view from the Brazilian side, whereas you can walk every angle in Argentina - bottom, middle, and top to get a view of everything. Definitely in the top 3 sights we've ever seen.
