Up at the crack of dawn, we packed up the car. It is always a complicated puzzle for Tim to get the bags in and still fit all of us too!
We made our way to Figueres an hour and a half away. Driving into town started out the same as any Spanish town we saw, but as we rounded the corner Dali's museum became visible, and there is nothing ordinary about it.
During 1960-1974, Dali took an old theatre and turned it into an art gallery; mostly of his own art, and art from a few other artists that he selected. Dali predicted that he would make this town famous and he did.
We knew we were at the right place because the building is topped with large white eggs, and dotted with pretzel shaped breads.
The gallery is bizarre and intriguing. Some of his images were disturbing to Belia so we tried to be on the look out and redirect her.
Dali used everything he could get his hands on to create art. We saw tires, fabric, paint, dolls, cars, boats etc...
One way that he worked was by holding a spoon over a metal dish while sitting in a chair. When he would fall asleep the spoon would drop making noise, waking him up out of a dream. When he woke up he would create his dream.
One of the rooms we walked into had two large framed paintings on the wall, sofa sized lips in front of the wall, and in front of the lips curtains hung. In front of all of it are steps to a viewing area. When we looked from the viewing area a ladies entire face came into perspective. It was amazing! Dali's museum is the largest surrealist structure in the world.
Dali is also buried in the museum. He died in 1989, 84 years old.
We had lunch in a cafe outside of the museum talking about all of the wild things we saw. Brennin, Mariah and Darius all thought it was the best art gallery/museum yet. Belia prefers Monet.
We drove on to Frejus and found our campsite. The campsite sits on a steep hillside covered in pine trees.
On arrival the check in wanted to keep our passport, they said it was policy. After some arguing for about 10 minutes they took Tim's drivers license instead. We did see a stack of passports that other people left but didn't think it was very smart.
We noticed a loud noise, much like someone shaking rice in a cup. It was constant, both in the morning and evening. We found out that it is the crickets. We only saw one, they mainly stay in the trees.

Oma and Opa Well, that was a lot of catching up! Great, that the internet connection was finally good enough. Reminds of this place here. Please tell Belia that I agree with her. I find Monet's colours so beautiful. In his last years I have read, that his eyesight was failing, explaining the often not very sharp contours. Dali is Anne's preferred painter, and she has two of his Divine Comedy prints, but he too often is too strange, although always interesting. Our next visit to Southern Europe will certainly include Figueres! Thank you so much for these interesting blogs.
