First thing in the morning Tim and Brennin made a trip to the bike shop because of a flat tire. When they returned we drove to Bakkum to visit Jetta's family.
Jetta met us at the front gate of the campground and directed us to the parking lot. We walked together to find their camp lot. The camp trailers were generally refurbished trailers from the 60s and 70s. Young families were enjoying the simple way of life away from the city and common conveniences.
When we arrived at Jetta and Caspar's lot we were greeted by Caspar. We visited for a while, relaxing in their yard.
After a while we took a walk to the sand dunes and beach. Jetta pushed her bike along using it to pack beach supplies. We noticed many people along the way doing the same; a bike in Holland is practically an appendage!
As we approached the dunes the landscape changed from flat to hilly; dark green scrub bushes were interspersed between long grasses waving in the breeze.
Jetta pointed out a giant photo frame crafted out of logs. It said "Groten Uit De Duinen", meaning regards from the dunes. We asked a lady passing by to take our group's picture. We snapped up a bunch more and continued making our way to the sea.
As we came over one of the dunes the vast sea came into view, a deep blue contrasting with the golden yellow sand that felt silky under our feet. We set out our blankets, and the kids immediately started exploring the seaside. Darius loved the gigantic waves.
Mariah said "you would be standing there and the wave would pick you up and swirl you around."
Belia covered her face when a wave approached, but she loved it.
Brennin tried to discretely change into his swimming trunks in the dunes, but every time he started to change kids playing in the sand would pop up. He had to go five dunes away before he could change in privacy!
Darius loved running down the dunes and into the water. The kids' favorite game was rolling around in the sand after getting wet, and pretending to be sand monsters; Jente and Wiebe loved this game too! We spent the afternoon enjoying the seaside, good conversation, and nibbling on snacks.
Near supper time we went back to Jetta and Caspar's camp and ate vegetarian hotdogs, croquettes and fries. Our conversations were interesting. We live in different cultures and it was fun to discuss the similarities and differences.
