We woke up early and zig zagged our way down the mountain. As we came around corners beautiful views of the bay would pop into sight. Within a half hour we made it to the harbor. I bought a white sun dress and a hat while we waited for our boat.
Our boat arrived, it was a long fairly narrow boat that sat low in the water. The entire bow of the boat had padding for lounging on. The back of the boat had a roof and benches for sitting in the shade.
Our driver was a quiet Italian - I know that is an oxymoron but he actually was quiet. Every so often he would tell us something about the area. He had a good sense of humor and made the trip very enjoyable. He told us that he lived on a mountaintop, and each morning he walks 1000 steps to reach the harbor where he works.
Three other couples were part of our trip. One couple was from Australia and they were on their honeymoon. One couple was expecting their first baby. The third couple was retired. We mostly chatted with the two Australians.
As we pulled away from the harbor we enjoyed more dramatic views of Positano from a new perspective. Again we were surprised at how the homes are built into such steep places.
We lounged on the bow taking in the sun and admiring the cliffs. Three narrow jagged rocks stuck out of the water, and next to them was a huge rock arch. The boat traveled under the arch stopping on the other side so we could take a swim. The water was a clear emerald color - very inviting, and with the heat even more inviting. We jumped in and were surprised by how salty it was. Getting back on the boat our driver would spray us off with a hose - right in the face thinking he was funny, it did feel refreshing and nice to rinse the salt off. He even gave Belia a turn to spay us.
Our driver moved in close to the cliffs to show us different grottos. The effect of the water and light against the caverns was stunning. A group of boats would take turns getting as close to the cavern as possible, but we did not go inside. At the Blue Grotto we did have the option of taking a rowboat in, but the wait was 1 1/2 hours, and the rowboats only stayed in the grotto for 5 minutes. Our driver would have waited but didn't highly recommend it. It was a hard decision because we have heard a lot about it, and grandma Adam loved it so much when she visited years ago.
We were dropped off on the Island of Capri for 4 1/2 hours. It was busy with tourists, taking away from the quaintness of the island. We loved the unique little shops though. Getting hot we took a much needed gelato break. Our next stop was the beach. Even though it was busy it was still beautiful. Again a very rocky beach including a row of boulders used as a water break. The kids put on their snorkels and hopped in. Tim, Belia and I sat on the beach enjoying the view. We had the feeling that the snorkeling must be good because the kids were staying out for a long time, and we could see them talking to each other. They came back very excited to report more colorful fish, with the highlight of seeing a small octopus moving over the rocks below them. Mariah took me out snorkeling showing me her favorite spots. I noticed a very colorful fish, blue and yellow, following something on the rock. I looked closer and camouflaged with the rock was an octopus. Wherever the octopus went the fish went too - the fish was actually blowing the octopus' cover. Mariah and I watched for about 5 minutes until the octopus climbed under the rock out of sight.
We stayed at the beach until we had to meet our boat. At the dock we exchanged stories with the Australian couple, telling each other what we did while at Capri. They decided to hire a boat to go out to the blue grotto, they didn't want to miss it. They really enjoyed the experience even though it was only 5 minutes. Tim and I decided that when we visit here again we will go for sure.
The ride back was not rushed. We had a chance to swim again. Tim and Brennin snorkeled over to a cliff wall but they said it was very dark and eerie.
We got back at 6:00. Brennin and Darius hurried up to our apartment, while the rest of us took our time checking out the shops on our way. Belia wanted a dress and we found a beautiful red and black one in a unique store where everything is handmade.
Back at home we made supper and lounged around on the decks before going to bed.

Oma and opa Opa and I have already decided, that as soon as we get the chance we'll go to the same area, but do hope finding a place closer to the beach! Did you see any? We never saw the Blue Grotto and think we have to still see that!
