Travel Blog of the Gaps
Regular followers of my musings (and I hope you are legion) perhaps detected that I rushed to complete my earlier blog entry from Salzburg.
If so, how very perceptive of you! I was practically shutting my laptop on my own fingers as finished writing, adding photos, and posting the entry. The computer finally released its internet connection about 10 minutes before my Salzburg hotel's deadline for check-out. Normally I reread my scribbles, but this time you got the raw material … which of course means I omitted a few items.
First, I am slightly mortified to admit that I found myself humming tunes from "The Sound of Music" as I wandered around Salzburg. Even I admit that “Do-Re-Mi” was too kitsch, but I kept working my way through the chord progressions and modulations in “I have confidence,” and at least once I caught myself humming, “How do you solve a problem like Maria?”
I don’t believe I mentioned the statue of the man standing atop the large brass ball, or the adjacent over-sized chess board painted on the square. Two gentlemen were enjoying a chess game as I entered. The statue is a part of a municipal art project, where a new art work is commissioned each year. This fellow has graced the square since 2004. The quaint town, the quirky statue, and the jumbo chess set -- does Salzburg have an atmosphere reminiscent of the TV show, “The Prisoner”?
Finally, some jagged and towering Alps are visible from Salzburg. Unfortunately, the air this week is uncooperatively hazy, so the camera cannot discern what the eye can see. Needless to say, the horizons are more magnificent than I can portray.
Here are some extra pictures. A bit later I'll fill you in on my first moments in Munich. But here’s a teaser: Jousting in the Glockenspiel.
Enjoy these photos.
