Today is the morning of our sixth day and we have already moved three times. We both agree this travelling lark is a very nomadic, basic experience, so much so that when we arrived here at Rainbow Lodge hostel, Taupo yesterday, to find that our room shared some resemblance to a cheap hotel we were hooked and immediately booked a third night! You might wonder why a cheap hotel appeals? I am sure that after knowing we spent our first two nights in Auckland in a room not much bigger than the average larder and in bunk beds that creaked even as we breathed, our excitement was therefore, quite justified.
After having orientated ourselves for two days walking the endless hills that encapsulate the city of Auckland, we travelled via the Naked Bus (yes it is called Naked) to our next port of call, Roturua and found refuge at the Spa Lodge. We at least had a double bed, but again we were in another larder, with shared bathroom facilities.
That said, we are paying a very basic rate for very basic accommodation, if we tried to do this trip via hotels we would have never made it past the UK coastline! However, hostel life is actually quite lovely, a group of people sharing a common goal in a foreign country is quite a bonding experience. For example our lives were a million miles away from the two young Israeli lads we met who's young lives had experienced and seen such awful atrocities, yet here we all were in a hostel doing and sharing the same experience - priceless!
On top of that each hostel has had every facility required to lead a normal life from washing and cooking facilities to a natural spa and a sauna. Yet the one burning question we ask each time has sadly been ' do they have WiFi'? As much as we have wanted to we cannot truly escape our lives, or could it be that we don't really want to? Stepping out of our lives and doing something quite random for three months is quite liberating, but doing it whilst staying connected to our families and friends makes it all the more special.
