Day trip to Nicaragua with the wonderful tour guide, Tony.
It was an early start (we headed out before breakfast!) but after travelling for a while in our minibus we finally stopped in Liberia for brekkie.
First, we stopped to view 2 active volcanos which were located just outside the Nicaragua border. We then moved onto the border, which was an experience in itself. Due to the border being used by drug traffickers coming from Columbia, heading to the states, security was at a VERY high level. Our guide informed us that any form of industrial transport (lorries etc) have a 7-9 day process to get through the border and customs. Hence the long time of lorries backed up the road!
Once in Nicaragua, we headed for Granada which is a town located near the notorious large lake. En route we stopped at the National Park which is home to a large Volcano crater. What a sight! And the heat that was being pumped out of the crater was unbelievable.
After leaving there, we headed for Granada town, where we stopped and had lunch. The restaurant was home to some parrots!
We then rode round the town in style, in our horse and carriage, seeing sights such as the old prison plus Nicaragua's oldest tree!
