Just a quick update today as we're currently in New Delhi airport waiting to board a flight to Bangkok this afternoon. We cannot believe India has come to an end.
We enjoyed our last day back in New Delhi yesterday - finally making it in to the massive Red Fort. We're so glad we didn't miss this place. We took an audio guide and really got to understand some of its amazing history - it's the best place in Delhi to imagine the Mughal city's sometime splendour. Back in the day it would have been a place of utter beauty and luxury - with eunuchs, ceremonial elephants, palanquins, and buildings lined with precious stones.
Since Independence landmark political speeches take place at the Fort, and now every year on Independence Day (August 15th) it hosts the Prime Minister's address to the nation.
The Brits had left quite a nasty stain inside the fort though, with some of the beautiful buildings being removed and replaced with ugly army barracks during the Empire. But it was still a beautiful and peaceful place to spend our last afternoon as the sun set on our India leg of the trip.
Sitting in the airport, we've definitely left India behind as it's just like any other international airport here - sparkling clean, with duty free, technology shops and even a McDonalds. Annoyingly we were unable to buy a McChicken Tikka burger as we've used up all our Rupees now, but we did manage to scrape enough together for a Mars bar…. Three weeks without chocolate and it was quite possibly the best thing we've tasted in ages! Bret has declared he can never move abroad though as he is craving our mums' roast beef dinners. (He's rather diplomatically not picking which Mum does the best and instead wants one of each!) Thanks Dad Corp for letting us know you were tucking into a roast dinner yesterday - can't get it off the brain now.
Anyway… before we go, we'll leave India with some vital statistics
