Hola America del sur !
First encounter with South America is Argentina, and we are really looking forward to it, but as things turn out, some
disappointments doesn't make it as fabulous as it should be.
We arrived in Buenos Aires, and noticed straight away that we were in more " dangerous waters". We knew we should be
more careful here then elsewhere. We drove through just outside of the airport many " slums " and noticed quickly the
size of the city. We found a hotel in the centre and wondered around in the city , but remembering all the time to ask
people if the area was safe.
One day we went to a game hall and while we were occupied playing, a b****** took off with my backpack including my new
Sony camera . After that we spent an hour at the local police station .You can imagine my day was ruined and of course
my experience of Buenos Aires became tainted.
But in Buenos Aires there are some amazing things that we enjoyed fully.
The meat and the wine is in a totally different level, and on top of that, the restaurant prices are low.(eating and drinking heaven).
So we did try everything from blood sausage , Sofies favourite, to intestine to all kinds of meat cuts and of course all of it
grilled to perfection. With a perfect Malbec from Mendoza, life is as good as it can get.
Believe it or not, there is something else to life than eating and drinking, and after just a few days we needed to do
something in between the gorgeous meals.
So we went to La Boca which is this poor neighbourhood where they painted all the houses from the leftover paint they
used at the harbour to paint the boats with. This neighbourhood was very cosy and we also there enjoyed to another great meal a Tango show.
We also went to the obligatory Ricoletta cemetery where Eva Perón has a tomb. Here, since there is lack of space , they
build huge tombs 4,5 meters high.
On Sunday we stumbled over a guided tour through the pink house (presidential house). That is recommendable since most of the other countries do not let you see the government buildings .
Except those very interesting sights there was not much more to see and we also had planned to go south to Ushuaia, and Mendoza.
We always manage to do so locally on our trips with great success, so you can imagine our disappointment when we found out that everything was sold out, and flights to Ushuaia and Mendoza were very expensive since here in south America they have summer holidays in January and February.
Annoyed, we tried to find anything else to do since driving 3000 km to Ushuaia was out of the question. We found Montevideo to be in our price range and went to see Uruguay as Jessica has written about.
All and all Buenos Aires is a meat and wine mecca, and there are some few sights, but 2 days here is enough and the rest of the holiday in Argentina should be in rural areas as most of the Argentineans also told us.
That is exactly what we will do next time we will be here , because we will be back.
