Yosemite National Park is one of those places that cannot really be described, either in words or images. The scenery is simply stunning. May is one of the best times to visit too, as the waterfalls are in full flow from all the heavy winter snowfall. There was actually still snow on the ground above 5000ft, as we made a hair-raising mountainside drive of 26 miles to see the giant Sequoias that only grow in the North American West. These trees, whilst not as tall (but closely related) to the Coastal Redwoods north of Monterey, are the most massive living things on the planet and can live for thousands of years. One of the trees in Mariposa Grove is over 2000 years old and still growing. We spent 12hrs in the park taking photo after photo. The waterfalls were amazing as this part of the US has had one of the worst winters on record - great for creating big falls though! The vistas were just as powerful as I remember them from my last trip over 5yrs ago. The weather was perfect too at around 70 in the valley. Unfortunately, it being a Saturday, the park was teeming with visitors, so all the shuttle buses were jammed. And so another evening with a cool Corona on the balcony, and ahead of us the longest drive of the holiday - over 7hrs down into the furnace that is Death Valley.
