There are plenty of spectacular landscapes in North America but the bits between can be tedious. Not only was the scenery dull but it seemed to be a very poor area. Maybe it's coincidence but the less affluent areas always seem to be Indian reservation - poor housing, battered cars. We crossed into Nebraska and things looked a touch better. Suddenly I spotted something I had heard of but forgot to check our route to ensure we saw it - Carhenge! What a stroke of luck that our satnav routed us via this strange place. Rising like monoliths from ancient times on the western edge of the Sandhills of Nebraska stands a formation of vehicles from days gone by. Is it a temple for sun worship, a healing centre, a burial site or perhaps a huge calendar? Carhenge which replicates Stonehenge is located just north of Alliance, Nebraska and is formed from vintage American automobiles, painted grey to replicate Stonehenge. Built by Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father, it was dedicated at the June 1987 summer solstice. It was built in a week! Apart from Carhenge our route doesn't seem to be a tourist one. With hungry bellies we looked for a rest area for an hour, eventually we parked up on a shut down gas station / restaurant. The quiet back roads merged into an Interstate highway and before long we settled into a campground spot on the outskirts of Cheyenne. This is just a stop over and grocery shop (Walmart), tomorrow we will be back in the Rockies. Great sunset.
