Day 28 - 28th July 2011 - 'Kwaheri' Kenya - Goodbye Kenya.
Jambo!
So now I am sat waiting outside gate number 10 to board my flight from Nairobi to Mumbai! Wow…. That sounds cool!
I have had a fab last few days in Kenya as it has been more like a holiday even though I have managed to do a little bit of work. After I finished writing my blog in the beach cyber café Matt and I decided to have a camel ride. Being a professional having ridden a camel in Egypt, for £27, I advised matt on how to protect his manhood and then enjoyed riding up and down the beach for only £1.40!! I feel I was somewhat ripped off in Egypt! I spent the afternoon in teacher mode organising a meal at 'The Cave' restaurant for our last night. Then it got a bit hectic… Some of the girls were swimming in the sea when Ashley stood on a Sea urchin! Unfortunately she managed to put all her weight on it and ended up with 41 spikes in her foot, a trip to hospital later we eventually made it back to camp after being forgotten about at the beach by camp! Eustace is useless!
Back at camp we had to as predicted fight for a bed! Lets just say when 4 groups of volunteers, 3 monthers , new 2 monthers , old 2 monthers and 1 monthers come together in one camp, all hell let loose! In the end Matt and I ended up in the girls room with, Emma, Holly, Anna, Laura, Ashley, Lois, Charlie, Little Charlotte, Funny Charlotte and Marieka. What a bummer! J With the exception of Marieka, from Germany, and including Bendy Tom this had become our 'crew'.
So after the fun and games of the Elephant-less sanctuary and a chill day on the beach it was back to work. The toilet had developed rapidly while we had been away with a floor and cubicle wall now in place as a result of the 3 monthers. Luckily for me, there was still a few more bricks to be laid so I grabbed a trowel and set to work at doing what I was best at, laying bricks! Yes me… laying bricks and being as far as I'm concerned good at it! During one of many breaks during the morning a local boy called Adam came to see me. I had seen Adam at school and taught him in one of my lessons. He had with him a ball. Now these balls are hand made and are a work of art. They boys collect plastic bags and eventually wrap them together before making an outer case with strips of plastic bag tied to make a net. I asked Adam how much it would be to make me one, the said 200KS so we agreed 500KS. He went home chuffed and I had a great souvenir. In the afternoon Matt and I decided we had worked hard enough for one day and wanted to go on a road trip. Ever since arriving in Kenya I had one mission I wanted to complete. I had to find Rachel's name on the wall she built in 2007 and also a boy called Sampuli. We hopped on the back of a motorbike, sorry mum, and went to Makongeni Camp. We were greated like royalty and given a guided tour. Then I found it! I spotted the plaque that I had seen in Rachels picture and headed for it. Shida it was 2006! Luckily next door there was 2007, I scanned the names and then got goose bumps, shivers, what ever you want to call it, I found Rachel H! How cool is that, my best friends name on a wall in Kenya and I found it! Now back to the man hunt for Sampuli. I asked the locals I found if they new him and all I got back was mixed answers. So it was back on the bikes and back to camp.
The day after (Day 26) was our last day at the toilet. Having finished the building part yesterday today was all about 'slappy slappy', or as it is more commonly known as, plastering. We managed to plaster most of the walls before I carved CAMP KENYA 2011 in one side and everyone put their names around. Hopefully one of my friends will be able to find this in a few years. If not my name then at least the BWFC badge I carved into the toilet later that night when nobody was around!! So toilet work done, mission Hussey almost complete and time in Kenya nearly up. But, the fun didn't stop there! On my way back to camp for lunch Camp Kenya Sampuli told me I had a visitor at the end of the road. So the whole shebang started again, hairs, goose bumps….etc…. I got to the end of the road to find a gangster dude waiting for me. However, this gangster was holding a picture of himself and Rachel! Now that's even cooler than the day before. After a brief chat, photo shoot and a phone call to Rach I headed back to camp very very happy! During the afternoon I decided that our group should take the afternoon off and persuaded everyone to visit Leonardo's for ice cream! I had the best ice cream ever! White chocolate, After 8 and Strawberry, all homemade! Followed by a Jim Beam and coke, the afternoon went without a hitch until we had to dodge police because we had 8 people in a 7 seat taxi! I hopped in a tuctuc to avoid one check point and the rejoined everyone in the taxi, followed by a sharp right turn by the driver up a dirt track and a de tour to avoid another check point. All was fine in the end and a good afternoon was had by all.
So the end had come, day 27, my final day in Kenya. After an extra few mins sleep because we weren't doing any project work, I packed all my things up. A big thank you to Georgia who has kindly taken all my souvenirs from Kenya and Egypt back to England for me! Then we spent the rest of the day writing leaving messages and prepping for an epic night! Remember the meal I organised on the beach, well tonight was the night. 30 of us pilled into The Cave restaurant, situated in a cave, and tucked into a fine dining experience. All went without a hitch, oh apart from I forgot to order my starter, and everyone had a great meal. The news came at the end though, because I had booked it, organised it and practically cooked it all, apart from my starter, the restaurant gave me a free drink. A double Jim Beam and Coke later and I was well ready for Forty Thieves. A great night was had by all, dancing with Masi tribe men, teaching them the London eye, and requesting S Club 7 and Spice Girls were the perfect ingredients for a great night. Not forgetting the compulsory, Orgasm, Sticky fingers and Sexy Wiggles, all shots in case you forgot… At 3.30am we all arrived back at camp, at 4am we got into bed, at 6am I got up, at 7am I left camp, 10am I took off and at 1pm I am writing this. All with a stinking hangover! Anyway, I left camp having had the best month ever with some of the best people. Everyone even got up to see me off as I was leaving early! Lets hope Inida will be just as good!
Bye for now xxx
