We arrived in Tulcan, the Ecuadorian border town around 11pm and upon arriving in the town looked for a connecting night bus over the board and up into Colombia.
However, it was soon made very clear to us that there were night busses that crossed the border. The reason for this was it was too dangerous. Just a month before the entire border had been closed due to bandits and hold ups. Now it was deemed safe enough to pass during the day but there were no bus companies operating at night. Instead Mathilde and I had to check into a hotel and think about what we could do with the evening.
The plan had been to visit the cinema, but there was no cinema in town. Fortunately, (or not) we had a TV in our room and the Eurovision song contest was showing. We bought some beers from the corner shop and played drinking rules so you drank every time:
- a topless man was on stage
- a woman with her boobs out is on stage
- every over dramatic hand gesture
- every bad joke
- every time a song isn´t sung in English
- every time there is a bad haircut
- every time there is gay man
It was good fun and we got a few a few beers. Mathilde also had a huge smile on her face as Denmark apparently never win anything and they managed to win the whole event - i tried to share her enthusiasm but struggled somewhat.
Next morning we were up early and after the worst breakfast ever got on the first bus crossing the border as we headed for Cali.
