We arrived at Floreana mid-morning and jumped straight into a bus to visit another tortoise centre. This one was a lot different though and the tortoises were free to roam in a semi-natural habitat. The tortoises on this island were incredibly endangered so they are being looked after at the centre, until the population recovers and they can be let loose once more. All of the tortoises we saw were fully grown adults and very very cool. They were very clumsy though and kept falling over rocks and nudging into each other, which just meant the photos were even better.
After we had posed with enough tortoises we headed further up the hill to the only freshwater source on the island which was a spring that came up from the rocks. Further on we walked through ancient coral reef that used to be underwater, before exploring caves inhabited by pirates. Around the corner there was even an Inca face carved into a rock showing the range of civilisations that explored the islands before Darwin did.
Now at the top we could enjoy the panoramic view as you could see volcanos in the distance, and beyond that the sea all around. We headed back downhill and got the bus back to the port where we enjoyed some lunch before it was time to snorkel again.
Back in the water it didn´t take long to realise there were turtles everywhere. We did look at some huge shoals of small colourful fish but frankly got distracted every 30 seconds by the appearance of another green turtle. At one point I could see 7 turtles around me! It was magical (and thats a word i don´t use very often).
We explored further around the cove and stopped near some sleeping sealions before starting to return to the beach where everyone else was. We were shocked to find that everyone had gone though and my bag cast a lonely figure on the beach. We got ready as quickly as possible and fortunately one man had noticed that the group were 2 short so were still there waiting for us. We got back on the boat for 2 hours back to Santa Cruz where we checked into a different hostel. After freshening up we went into town for some food where I enjoyed a giant seafood barbecue - well I am in the Galapagos after all. Once more though we headed home early because we had an early start, although that didn´t stop us visiting the roof terrace first to enjoy the view and talk a lot of nonsense in the hammocks!
