So. It has ended. The final flight from Dubai will leave soon. I have not given too much thought to this closure yet. Even though people asked how it would feel to go home. To end this adventure.
For the past four months home has been wherever I unpacked my stuff. Or didn't bother and just got out my pyamas&toothbrush just to crash down on the bed exhausted. Any place where I have spent more than two days. Any place where I have met great people. I'll have to get used again to sleeping in the same place for a longer period. Not being on the 'run' all the time. I do miss it. My crappy shower at home, always fighting with me to not be scolding or freezing cold. My own bed, my favourite pillow. Lazing there in the afternoon, reading, having the warming sun on your face. Can't wait to finish decorating my living room.
As I was eating lunch today, looking at the few lonely fries put in there with the lamb I got the sudden cravings for a 'patatje met satesaus van Smullers'. Even though I hardly ever eat that crap. I just realised today that I forgot what the euro looks like. Can't for the love of good picture it in my mind. This is getting awkward.
Settle back in. But won't it be boring? Asia is such an awesome place. Everyone is so open and friendly. And curious. About you, your life, your country. Likewise, we are curious as well and this has a perfect mix. Even though at times you can't understand a word they are saying, and probably they don't either and you just smile. And laugh. And make stupid kindergarten drawings to try to get your point across. Become instant friends. Well, or some weak version thereof.
But the most rewarding experience is meeting fellow travellers. They are already like-minded, adventurous. Exchanging stories of places you both have been, the stupid things you have done creates an immediate bonding that is a wonderfully rare experience. I love that.
Asia is a wonderful place. But after a while cities start to blur together, mountains merge into one and just as the sun is the same everywhere, the newness, its polish wears off. Another city. Why bother. More temples. Pfft. Statues *yawn*. Waterfall? Seen that. Tropical beach? The same. It has to be something really, really special to grab your attention. What always changes are the people. And as I said earlier this is what makes this place so unbelievably awesome! Where else would you be regularly invited to pay them a visit after talking for only an hour orso and know it is a genuine invitation? Me too extend the same hospitality but know deep down it is an empty promise. These people would most likely never have the money to travel to Europe. But for them it's real.
Hmm, I think I started blurring out inconsistent nonsense by now. Better stop. Home. No idea what it'll feel like. If I could settle back in. From here, at this point it seems near impossible. We'll see.
Now... let's rest a bit.
