Tom C-B's Travels 2006
Hey everyone - second report back from Thailand just to let you know how its all going!
SATURDAY (continued...)
After a quick update this morning (see previous entry) we went out to explore the Khaosan Road, on which we are staying. Bustling markets, weaving tuk tuks, and an over-bearing heat met us as we stepped out into the blinding sunshine, and we trawled amongst the many stalls, taking in the multitude of sights, smells, and sounds.
After a while on Khaosan Road we decided to go to the Grand Palace, a must-do tourist attraction only a short way from where we were. We could probably have walked the distance without too much difficulty but, for adventure's sake, we embarked on our maiden voyage in a tuk tuk. An exhiliarating ride was in store and I did my best to capture the moment with a short film on my camera. We arrived at the Grand Palace and were told that I had to put on trousers, and Kim had to wear a shirt and long skirt. These were loaned out from the info desk, and we emerged from our respective dressing rooms looking like we had tried, but failed dismally, to embrace the culture! To our relief, there were plenty of other westerners looking equally as ridiculous, so we got on with some good old sightseeing. We spent most of the afternoon there and left in search of more...
I bought some traditional Thai fishcakes from a street stall and we just meandered along the roads until we stumbled across the Wat Po Temple. There we saw the 'Reclining Buddha' and many other impressive temples, after which we hopped in another tuk tuk back to our hotel.
Once there we went to the travel desk and arranged a two day, one night trip to Chiang Mai. After sorting that out, I quickly used the internet and sat down to watch The Da Vinci Code, while Kim stayed on the internet.
All of a sudden it was 7:30 so I went up to the room and read my book as Kim was finishing up on the web. We chilled out in the room for a while and decided to get some dinner. I had Thai Green Curry and Kim had stir fried vegetables, all for under 3 quid, so that was marked down as a success. After eating we went in search of fisherman's pants, and we both came away with a new addition to our wardrobe! That was the day pretty much over so we went back to our hotel room, got showered, and went to bed.
SUNDAY (today)
Woke up in good time so that we could carry on exploring where we left off, deciding on Siam Square as today's main destination. With free brekkie and checkout out of the way, we once again used the services of a tuk tuk to get there. A slightly longer journey this time allowed for more hair-raising, simply suicidal driving, and we were glad to be on solid ground by the time we arrived in Siam Square. It is basically made up of a number of huge shopping centres containing department stores, food halls, and even one with its own aquarium! We worked our way methodically round them all, taking us the best part of 4 hours and, with our feet aching, we sat down to recuperate and have a bite to eat.
We left Siam Square, this time in a taxi, and got back to Khaosan Road at rougly 3:30pm, with 2 and a half hours to kill before our pick up to go to Chiang Mai. We put some photos on a CD and came to the internet, being the great time-waster that it is!
So the first two days in Thailand and already a lot to write about. We'll be in Chiang Mai now until Wednesday so get ready for that entry - we've been promised elephant riding, bamboo rafting, and jungle trekking, so it could be a big one...!
See ya
