Today's destination was Trivandrum where we would fly out of the following day. We jumped a tuktuk to the station and waited on the platform whilst toom performed a few dances for the other passengers. As the train pulled up there was a surge towards the end of the platform where everyone congregated to get a space on the packed train. Somehow we managed to get a coupe of small standing spaces and with the help of other passengers, lift our bags into the storage rack. Squashed in with the locals in 3rd class, we headed towards the city of Trivandrum. Again we jumped on a tuktuk to our hotel. We had booked the cheapest in the city, which certainly lived up to its expectations. We dumped our gear and went in search of Kerala cuisine. We walked around 20 minutes to a place we had been recommended. Despite it being closed, we found one next door that was bustling. We sat at the back of the restaurant and were quickly joined at our table by two guys in their early 20s who we ended up chatting to whilst the long wait for our food. They were both students and really friendly. After lunch we again saw them outside and they asked us if we would like to go to the temple and beach with them that evening. We met them later that evening at our hotel when they turned up with a scooter for us! As we were not Indian Hindus the plan of of the temple was off but we headed through the streets on our scooter, following their motorbike. India offers a crazy driving experience and tonight was no different. Using the horn plentiful, we dodged numerous cars and bikes as we made our way to one of the guys house. This was his house that he used when he was back from uni. We had an orange juice and looked over his Uni architect drawings then headed to the beach and the nightmarkets for some local street food. It was was quite a distance on the scooter through the busy streets. We parked the bikes up then went for a walk along the beach in the dark in the howling wind with our new mates. We took shelter for a while in another torrential downpour. After visiting an enormous stone mermaid statue that the King once commissioned for his palace in the area, we set off to find some street food. Our new friends bought is some dosa and pancakes from the local street food area which was made from a series of tarpaulins. We sat outside and shares stories whilst we enjoyed our dinner. It was getting late and the sky was threatening another downpour so we made it back to the hotel, incident free on our scooters. We swapped numbers with our friends and said goodbye after what was a really nice evening. We expected Trivandrum to merely be a stopover before catching our flight out, however once again the amazing Indian hospitality and kindness shone through to make it a great day in the city.
